Meita Touray, Treasurer of the Gambia Press Union, has expressed concern over the re-emergence of both old and new threats, both physical and online. She emphasised the urgent need to train members to protect themselves in the field.
Touray made these remarks during a three-day training program for journalists on Physical and Online Safety, which took place from August 26 to 28, 2025, at a local hotel in Kololi. The training brought together 40 journalists to equip them with essential safety tools to safeguard themselves and their work.
She highlighted the importance and timeliness of the training, given the current situation in The Gambia, where journalists often face safety threats while covering political events, protests, and other critical reporting areas. Touray stated that this training is a vital investment in the personal and professional integrity of members who continue to inform and educate the public, even in challenging and unpredictable circumstances.
She emphasised that the training is a direct response to the risks journalists face daily while reporting on critical public interest issues. She said the program is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their work safely and professionally. She said they will learn about various aspects of physical and online safety, which will empower them to carry out their essential duties with increased confidence and security.
She noted that the Gambia Press Union has previously conducted safety training for several journalists; however, many more still require this training, especially with another election cycle approaching, a time when tensions often run high.
She encouraged participants to make the most of this training and to engage with the trainers to gain further insights on how to stay safe at work. Additionally, she advised them to share the knowledge gained from the training with colleagues who were unable to attend.
She reiterated the union's commitment to continually enhancing the skills and capabilities of journalists. “We will also continue our advocacy for a free and safer environment for journalists,” she stated.
